I was actually wrong about that -- I had asked him about doing three
fonts, and I thought I remembered him saying around $3000... but that
was per font.

I still may be able to persuade him to do a trade with me, and perhaps
use another font as a base, and get a really nice system font
developed for a reduced price. I was looking at Lacuna (if I hear back
from the original designer) -- does anyone have any objections?

From my experience making a good font is an extremely hard and that's because
it's an extremely hardwork. Plus that is only for Latin characters.
(Faces isn't as hard
as doing hinting, kerning, ligature, etc. on every differently
possible font scales)
I don't have any objection here.  But there are some expensive and free fonts
from open office (Thanks Sun! But I think they are ugly though I don't
share my opinion
with publisher level users :), So make sure you've checked them.
I just to make sure you understand why font are really expensive and
make your decision
based on that.
