From my experience making a good font is an extremely hard and
that's because
it's an extremely hardwork. Plus that is only for Latin characters.
(Faces isn't as hard
as doing hinting, kerning, ligature, etc. on every differently
possible font scales)
I don't have any objection here. But there are some expensive and free fonts
from open office (Thanks Sun! But I think they are ugly though I don't
share my opinion
with publisher level users :), So make sure you've checked them.
I just to make sure you understand why font are really expensive and
make your decision
based on that.
Yep -- the person who I've talked to about designing a font is
probably the best typographer and biggest typophile I know (and that
is saying a lot coming from someone who spent 4 years in art and
design school).
He's fully aware of all the challenges with designing a good typeface,
and has built them before. The $3000 was partially a deal because we
are friends and he knows this is for an open source project.
So, I'll keep everyone posted -- but he did say he was probably going
to start playing with designs this week, just for fun.
J.
