Just lease the DOCSIS modem from Comcast for $3 a month. When you multiply
it out not worth buying one, unless you get one really really cheap.

Monthly total should be $42.95 + $3 = $45.95. That is if you also have
Digital cable (you get a $10 "loyal customer" discount.. somebody went to
marketing school). Otherwise total is $55.95.

Setup is so straight forward. Just the crossover cable between modem and
network interface and set DHCP and DNS to automatic and away you go. Don't
install ANY of the Comcast software on your system, even if they tell you
they have to.

For a small home network you may want a SOHO firewall/gateway/switch
e.g. NetGear RP614 10/100Mbs Cable Router

Or you may want a wireless unit and/or with stateful packet inspection.
