USB mice are expensive and require a trip to the store or its web site.
PS/2 mice are already sitting here ready to go.

Also, mouse design and quality seems to have been going downhill over
the last few years, as (a) they are designed more for showroom appeal
than for usability, and (b) prices have plummeted.  Apple's acrylic
disk mouse is the poster child...
