Another more mundane explanation might be related to the effect of "knowing that something is possible". I believe there is some research on this effect. In sports, for example, when someone breaks a psychological barrier (e.g. running a mile under 4 minutes), it's not unusual for other athletes to replicate the record soon enough. But I'm talking out of my ass, as you Americans say. I'll read for myself. I agree with you that too much skepticism can be counterproductive. As Carl Sagan put it, there's an ideal mix of skepticism and wonder.
