2.4.16 (as compiled by red hat in rawhide) had a lot of issues for me,
so I fell back. I'd have assumed it was VM (may still be) but like I
said I've seen it in situations where basically nothing other than
system daemons and bash were running, so basically no swapping was
taking place. 

To clarify: I like RH a lot... I'm certainly not trying to blame them.
If it was that irritating, I would have switched back to 7.1 or to
Debian. I'm just describing the situation as I see it and trying to
defend Ximian against what I see as completely groundless accusations.
