I've run Ximian Desktop on no less than 4 computers (two laptops, one
PC, and one Ultra 5) and helped my friends set up Ximian apps on their
Linux boxes and I can honestly say that I've not seen what you have. 
I've yet to see "unreliable performance" from anything Ximian's put out.

Of course I had one machine that locked up running RH 7.2 + Ximian ...
and it did the same with Windows 98, and Mandrake 8.1 with no Ximian.
Turns out it was a cooling issue (or rather a "lack of cooling" issue).
I'm no doctor (nor do I play one on TV) but it sounds to me like it's a
hardware problem.

But, as they say, "Your mileage may vary."
