Ditto for my father: completely stock + Ximian + all updates.

Asus K7M  - AMD-751 Chipset
AMD Athlon 500 (slot)
Matrox Marvel G400

I'm inclined to think it is something to do with some specific hardware
configurations.  There are obviously more people out there using RH 7.2
happily than there are experiencing these hard lockups.  

Although RH 7.2 seems to be one common denominator, it can't be the only
one. 

At this point this is off topic - anyone know what RedHat list is the
most appropriate?
