No, they don't all have attachments. I initially thought there must be a problem with the external companies SMTP service, but then realised the timeout error message was being generated by them and not me! Therefore my SMTP virtual server is sitting there at the DATA prompt doing not a lot, and then getting timed out by the remote server.
I forgot to add I am using Groupshield 6.0, could this be interfering? The mail entry is marked up for a retry and eventually goes through. I have manually connected to the external site in question using Telnet and the remote system is performing as expected, there are no excessive delays. Can anybody shed any further light/suggestions?
