Certainly. I've worked with the three that I'd consider to be most mature/have the most features - Zantaz EAS, Symantec Enterprise Vault and EMC's EmailXtender.
Each of them basically do the same thing - use a MAPI client to scan every item in a mailbox (or on a filter you specify), pull it into another format in their own database/HSM model, and on a formula you specify, replace mail items with "stubs" (i.e. replacing an item with an attachment, with one having no attachment and some method for retrieving it with their client). Most client options will include the paperclip icon, though none of them will retrieve the attachments in AutoPreview/Reading Pane views. Each vendor generally requires that you install an Outlook plugin to retrieve attachments, though. (there are also options for OWA, IMAP and Entoruage, depending on the vendor). If you're interested in going down that road, take a close look at a few of the products. While they all perform the same function (ingest all email content that you need for compliance, stub out attachments to save space) - they each have substantial weaknesses and advantages. Symantec's has the better client, Zantaz better performance/storage, and EmailXTender has better reporting. None of them are a simple, easy-to-manage offering, though. Nothing degrades Exchange performance like digging into the store and pulling back EVERY item in it, in a short period of time. Both stubbing operations AND normal ingestions will have a transaction log impact (stubbing deletes the original and replaces it with a custom messageclass - ingestions usually stamp a custom MAPI property on so they don't have to do a full checksum of the item on later passes, they just read the custom property and skip it). Both involve a translog hit that can be difficult to calculate for large jobs. I can supply more info off-list...because I've worked with each of the three vendors listed, it's hard to keep my own discovery and non-disclosure materials separate in my head ;) --James -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Albert Duro Sent: Sunday, December 23, 2007 9:31 AM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: Re: Detaching attachments Have you used such software, and can you offer any assessments and recommendations? ----- Original Message ----- From: "James Wells" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Exchange Discussions" <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, December 22, 2007 8:38 PM Subject: Re: Detaching attachments > Most of the top e-mail archive vendors will remove attachments, keeping a > stub (and the icon), and preserve some level of Single-Instance > Storage...but Sent Items will pull back a full copy of the attachment, > unlike this software... > > > --James > > > On 12/22/07 10:01 PM, "Albert Duro" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > >> Glad to see that esteemed name back on the list! >> >> I pretty much agree with you, Martin.
