Ummmm, wait... 2.4 kernel huh?  It could be a bad bridge mapping or 
video mapping from the Toshiba BIOS to the 2.4 kernel which is the first 
one that lets BIOSes tell it about memory and how it is mapped.

What happens if you use linux mem=43M?
