Hmm. I should also have said that I used the retail box version (from
Fry's electronics) and it still happens, so I'm hoping the media is
good (especially since I tried a friends retail box version (the 7 or 8
cd set, for both his and mine), and had the same problem. I've also
tried a downloaded version and it had the same result.

So I'm hard pressed to think that its the CD media. Perhaps I'm
having trouble with the CD drive in my laptop - but when I tried
doing a network install it ran overnight asking the network for something
and never got anywhere (using solaris as nfs server, with pcmcia ethernet
card). I'll try some other things and report back later (things like
ftp install, another nfs install with a mandrake nfs erver, etc).

Civileme - if the people you know who have gotten 8.1 to work
on their toshibas want to email me directly that would be fine
if they have any ideas...

Thanks!
