Man, it just seems like you're wasting a lot of time working on this
when you've got a fully functioning 2.4.17 kernel that you've
successfully built from source.

I don't know what these patches are that you're worried about, but IIRC,
they have some security enhancements/fixes?  How many users (besides
yourself) are logging into your laptop (if this is still  your laptop)?
I'd just say put up a firewall that blocks all incoming service requests
(if it's got an external IP) move along, and forget about it. There's
too many other fun things to do on a system than recompile kernels all
day.  Know what I'm sayin?
