Mark,

since you've got to ping the laptop from mybox before it will connect 
suggests that mybox is not broadcasting it's services to the network, OR 
it's broadcasts are being squelched by something/someone on the LAN 
where these two reside. It's sounds more like the first though since the 
laptop doesn't have any trouble at all at finding mybox when it's 
running win2K.
