Clearly you don't own a newer ACPI-based i815 Sony Vaio :-) I've had to upgrade to a cooker kernel to get it to function at all (2.4.20-2mdk, was either that or compile my own from scratch). Now it is fine as long as I'm careful about video switches, but I can reliably kernel panic it by logging out of XFce or leaving VMware in fullscreen mode until the Windows "it's now safe to turn off your computer" screen. I've sent a note to Juan Quintela, but since I can't get the oops because it's video related, there's nothing he can do. Then there's swsusp, which is another excellent source of crashes.
