Frankly, his blog is excellent reading; you will at the very least
understand the difficulty of the issue when you finish, and you will
enjoy the experience.

I apologize for doing nothing but suggesting ideas here... But here's
another idea.

What if binary were the default, but different filters could be
attached to a binary stream to modify how it behaved? This would be
something like the Java API, which isn't the most pleasant thing to
deal with, but that's mainly because it chains so poorly (you have to
write a few short paragraphs of code to get anything done, rather than
being able to write a short sentance).
