Strictly speaking, we all should have known that it was a joke when the guy was referred to as "Raja" in the first sentence and without quotation marks. Reuters would have used only the guy's first and last names.
I don't think serious damage was intended. If there had been such intent, the joker wouldn't have given the game away with the references to the newt and the elves.
