One of the reasons the Hindu scriptures almost universally rail against siddhis (Patanjali, Vyasa, etc.) is that they are considered inimical to jivan-mukti or Liberation in this Life. There are a lot of technical reasons why that is so. The short answer is they get you stuck by strengthening the outward stroke (vyutthana-samskara). Keeps you locked into the I-Maker, the ego or Ahamkara.

But not everyone is interested in Liberation, so some follow yogic- siddhis. It's a great way to control your students too.
