I think standards are good. Despite my defense of Tom, I think making
racial epithets on a list like this is inappropriate. As I do subtle
slurs -- even if not intented but only non-thinking -- per my comments
on Peter's post. I am not sure where to draw the line in terms of list
governance. But for someone like Tom, direct confrontation and like
insults are like throwing oil on a fire.

Given Tom can dish it out sometimes in rude ways, what is a healthy
response -- for the list, for the person feeling insulted, and for
Tom? To call Tom an unmitigated asshole? I don't think so. That just
"turns Tom on" gets his vintictive "me against the world" juices flowing.

Ignoring such can work. Sometimes inflamatory posters seek provocation
and an excuse to get pissed at someone. If ignored, they shrivel up.
Like peter's ... oh never mind.

Or systematic, unemotional questions. "Tom, why do you believe that?"
A sort of socratic method.

So people are rude. IMO, there are a lot of rude people on the list.
Like tom, direct confrontation of them, for most, is not effective.

So when someone is rude -- what to do? Maybe just whine about it.
Maybe that will work.

I understand how that is rude.

I fail to see how that is rude. Its a choice. lots of people here post
and then don't respond to comments.

So ones inner thinking is rude. No, sorry, I can't buy that one.
