There is a good chance that mine may be cut next year. I have a teamster
pension. So far, UPS has been responsible for paying it but next year the
teamster take control.They are severely underfunded because they've taken the
money UPS contributed for it's employees and paid pensions for retirees of
other companies that didn't contribute as much leaving them underfunded. Now
they say they will have to make *tuff* choices, cutting pensions from as much
as $3,ooo a month or more to $700. They say they won't cut pensions of someone
over 80 or of someone disabled. I was forced into retirement due to disability
and currently on SS disability. However, I don't trust them.

Pensions were never meant to keep paying the salary you received when
working. They were made to make your retirement more comfortable than just
having Social Security. Same was true in selling the idea of 401Ks and we know
how well that worked out. Unless you are a money hound and at least an amateur
stockbroker these often don't work out well at all.
I've read some posts on a board from folks getting these pensions and
admitting that though they're nice to get weren't really all that necessary.

City problems are due to really incompetent people running them be
they Republican or Democrat. They've done stupid things like offer
unsustainable pension plans to attract new employees. I still think those were
sold to them because Wall Street wanted to gamble with that money. We've
allowed these people to run things because the public is generally apathetic
and a lot of city elections are confusing and corrupt.
