Thanks to all who made suggestions about this problem. Like most pianists in contemporary music, this one is familiar with the 8va treble clef -- but he finds the Finale clef's '8' too small (and I agree). A bolder clef alteration would be welcome, if anyone has access to one. I might resort to designing a special 8va treble and 8va bass for my own use.
This is also a piece that is mostly in the 8va range, but there are notes that jump *way* out and require the additional indications briefly. That's why John's suggestion of using 15ma throughout still presents the problem of how to mark the cancellation clearly. I've concluded that Andrew's recommendations are closest, and without a better 8va treble clef, I'll use the 8va--- (sempre) indication with the remaining notes & areas marked 15ma---| and loco---| as needed. David's comments are well-taken. In fact, several of these preludes do use 3 staves (one uses 5). In the particular example, the material really belongs on one staff (musically, grammatically). But there will be some quick switching back and forth ... not a lot, but enough. In any case, it'll be an issue of memorization, whether or not ledger lines are used. Thanks again to everyone. Traditional notation just has its drawbacks sometimes! Dennis _______________________________________________ Finale mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://mail.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale
