By the way, has Makemusic/Codamusic _ever_ made a profit?

I don't know about "ever" but apparently not recently.

They face a tough confluence of circumstances.

1) They are selling a software product. That isn't easy at this stage of the industry. There is a lot of "leakage" through pirating.

2) They are selling to musicians. Need I say more? :)

3) They are trying to modernize a product that has some, how shall we say, difficult roots. The progress in that regard has been excellent, IMHO, looking at the last 5 releases for example.

4) They are trying to do all this is an economy that is pretty close to depression state. The government claims that there are "only" 12 million unemployed, but that excludes many millions for whom benefits have already run out. It excludes the millions of families that have decided to drop back to one wage-earner because the second party can't make enough money to offset child care transportation and other costs. And it also excludes the millions with graduate degrees working pretty close to minimum wage. It is a very tough environment for any company and especially for tech companies.

5) They have tried to launch an internet-based business (music distribution) at a time when dotcoms were collapsing. I think that is the right business direction, but it is a painful move at a painful time.

I certainly have sympathy for their situation and like everyone else here, strongly want to see them succeed. The OSX thing is probably a pretty big deal in the school market, so hopefully they can turn the corner on that one soon.
