Actually I never gave a specific figure. I seldom have a problem w. a 5% reduction, and when forced can sometimes accept up to 10%. Actually, I find that what is acceptable in one score may not be acceptable in another because my cut-off criterion, "immediately apparent to the eye," varies greatly depending on the density and distribution of the notes, interstaff spacing, etc. I can't speak to the examples Darcy gives because I don't have any of the editions he refers to.


Certainly I wouldn't call a variation in staff size "drastic" until it approached or exceeded 20%, so I suspect this may all be a matter of semantics.

Another point: When Finale reduces the size of a page or system, it reduces the thickness of all the lines proportionally, while in hand-engraved old editions the line thickness would usually remain constant. This to me makes a huge (positive) difference in the acceptability of varying page reductions.
