Apologies for the slight hijack...but thanks for pointing out the option you describe, it's there on PC 2k3.

It's what I wanted for one particular case in something I'm copying, but it also alters a huge number of other beamings. In particular, 16th-note tuplets which are 'note-rest-note' take a split second beam, where the composer (who wants things as he writes them) expects solid double beams. Is there a way of changing the setting locally?

I have an 8th, followed by a 16th rest, and then a 16th, beamed together. The secondary beam over the last 16th is too long. How can I shorten it? I would like to get the same thing I get with a dotted 8th followed by a 16th.

Sounds to me like you have "Extend Secondary Beams Over Rests" turned on. In Fin Mac 2k2, that setting is under Document Settings -> Beaming, but I understand the document options menus were slightly rearranged with 2k3.

In any case, find "Extend Secondary Beams Over Rests" wherever it is, uncheck that box, and I'll be you get what you want.

Is this setting turned on by default in any of Finale's templates? I honestly don't know. In my experience, the only time you'd ever want that option checked is in a time signature like 9/16 where your beat is a dotted eighth, and you need to beam over rests with both beams. Otherwise, it just makes funny-looking situations like the one you described.
