Also, I think you might not have to use the 12/8, that nested triplets might have worked just as well. But like I said, I found it easier to work out in 12/8.
Actually, once I thought about it a little further, the nested triplet solution was dead easy -- just change the meter back to 4/4, and but a "3 half notes in the space of 2 half notes" triplet over the entire bar.
