Noel told you what I would do for this situation, in the first reply
on this thread. What I don't understand is why you think it is
cumbersome. You can define a (shape) expression to position itself
automatically precisely on the left (or right) barline position, and a
staff style to hide the barline is trivial and easy to apply with a
metatool. With only a little setup you can zap those suckers in
reliably in no time. (Assuming you are at least on Fin04 or higher.)

Anyway, I can't find built-in tick marks that look like the ones in
your example, so you would have to create a shape for them in any
case.
