Thank you Erik (and Ryan),

Erik was right - good printer, bad toner cartridge.  I didn't think about that 
possibility, but the mechanical noise was, indeed, from inside the cartridge 
mechanism (sounds like gears not meshing).  Replacing the cartridge put 
everything back in order.  I hope for more years of use from the printer.  I 
like new things, but don't enjoy being forced to buy them.  I can afford to 
replace the toner cartridge!
