Putting the punctuation after the word extension is sufficiently non-standard that I'm really not surprised that Finale doesn't support the practice. But I'd add to Steve Parker's workarounds, hard-coding word extensions using the underscore (_) character, and place the punctuation at the end of the string of underscores.
