Dave,
   I guess that implies that there will be a problem 
if the following steps occur...

1) the old lammpi is already installed
2) openmpi-dev is then installed overwriting the files in the old lammpi
3) the old lammpi is then upggraded to the new lammpi. 

When dpkg deinstalls the old lammpi it will remove those
conflicting files that belong to openmpi in the process, no?
   We have one other issue at play with regard to the decision whether
to create a lammpi2 package. The stable lammpi is built with g77
whereas lammpi is using gfortran (so that it can build on macintel).
This means that even with symlinks, the shared libs of lammpi will
be no good if the MPI code built that uses it involves fortran code.
