my last employer had me sign a an agreement which stated that anything I 
researched or invented, or concieved of, on company time or tools was property 
of the company. 
It was very clear that their business was intelectual property ( as is often the 
case these days) and your intellect and the products thereof,  if used on there 
time or money was their property.
