as for me, developing web apps is really for dummies, i'd rather do something interesting in molecular biology... (but unfortunately I got this CS degree). As for hiring, i think there is no big need for Phds - Google and likes are big companies - they need soldiers too - to implement the ideas of those fews with big brains. So you always have a chance :)
