"I wonder if I can build a new interface cable with an external power source. With minimal current drain a 9v battery should easily last a contest weekend. "

Al,

I did exactly that when I was trying to get an Icom hand mic to work w/ the 1500. In my case, the connecting cable was homebrew anyway, so adding a 9v battery clip was easy - and it worked great; the tx audio cleaned right up. Also, that battery will last a lot longer than a weekend!

Al,
It this a brand new Traveler? Reason is tha the previous Travel would not work with the 1500 due to the need for cleaner bias voltage for the mic, which would cause a buzz in the audio with just the adapter.. Same adapter works fine with the 3000, Heil was reportly planning a Traveler with out the need for bias voltage to make the mic work.. So now you see why I asked the question. But this is not the reseason the PTT is not working, if it works on the 3K it should work fine on the 1500, like I had said previously on the 3K , check the slip pins on the 1500 jack.
Well, whoop-de-doop. I put some switch-cleaner on the RJ-45 on the Heil adapter, and the PTT works with the F1500 now. Must have been a slight difference in contact geometry between the 3000 and 1500.

However, I do in fact have the audio problem you described. Before I would just hit MOX and talk, and see the signal on the external power meter. Now that I actually listen to it there is lots of crud that I hadn't noticed before. I didn't realize that the Heil used a powered mic element. I do vaguely recall a discussion on this topic a while ago. My headset is at least five years old, but works well with the FT-817 and as mentioned the F3000. I really don't fancy buying a new one just for the F1500. I wonder if I can build a new interface cable with an external power source. With minimal current drain a 9v battery should easily last a contest weekend.

I really appreciate your comments on this. It has certainly clarified my situation.
