I used a 3K carbon comp for no reason other than that it was the most suitable value that came out of the junkbox when I reached in for a 'pinch' of resistors. :-) It worked fine for the Icom HM-12 microphone that I was trying to use.

    Al,

I did exactly that when I was trying to get an Icom hand mic to
work w/ the 1500. In my case, the connecting cable was homebrew
anyway, so adding a 9v battery clip was easy - and it worked
great; the tx audio cleaned right up. Also, that battery will last
a lot longer than a weekend!

It probably means you have the value of the bias resistor wrong. I normally use 220 ohm but if I am being picky, I will adjust it to try to get the mic voltage and output swing I want. +5V is a little low but should still work.
