The answer to your question is twofold:
1. sample rate;
2. number of samples used in the FFT.
As a long-time user of FFT methods, I am very aware of what you say.
Unfortunately you mistook my question for one of your own devising. I am
not asking for both "span" and "resolution," merely better resolution.
As far as I can tell, the lowest sampling rate available to me is 48K.
At this sampling rate, the resolution is inadequate. There does not seem
to be a way to do better. I don't seem to have any control over the
number of samples in the transform in pSDR.
Another responder suggested I just forget about the waterfall mode in
pSDR and use the one in the program I am using to decode whatever
digital mode I am using. Here again, the responder devised his own
question and then answered it, rather than answering mine.
A wide span is useful in panadapter mode. It gives an overview of band
activity. A narrow span is particularly useful in some digital modes,
provided that the resolution is increased. I was asking if there is a
way to increase the resolution on the waterfall in pSDR that I have
overlooked. I am perfectly content to lose scan width (I have mine set
almost to its minimum anyhow). The waterfall mode in fldigi is excellent
wrt resolution, but the display is only 160 pixels high maximum, and it
would be useful to capture more time-on-screen. As you say, it is only a
few kHz wide, but that is enough. The waterfall mode in MixW can be made
taller, but here again I'd rather "fix my Toyota, than sell it and buy a
Ford." If pSDR is not usable in this connection, then I will ditch its
waterfall mode and use the one in the digital program.
