Subject: Health Info

Elan,

Well, here goes...

I was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins Lymphoma in 2004 and it was treated with six
months of chemo. It returned in 2009
with six more months of chemo. As part of my regular checkups in 2009, a CAT
scan detected a benign cyst (that could go malignant in time) in my pancreas.
This had to be removed by what doctors call the "mother of all abdominal
surgeries" along with the head of my pancreas (Whipple surgery). This surgery
essentially "rewires" your upper intestines and the duodenum and part of the
small intestine (and gall bladder if you have one...mine was removed in 2002)
is also removed. The surgery has caused some pancreatitis, which is painful at
times. I also became a diabetic since what remains of my pancreas cannot
produce enough insulin. I inject myself once a day with long-acting insulin and
once a day with a drug that helps the insulin work better called Victoza. I
also have to take digestive enzymes before each meal.

There is a strong possibility that the lymphoma will return sometime in the
next couple of years and I may or may not respond to chemo again. There are
more exotic treatments such as stem cell or bone marrow transplants which are
essentially a last resort and fairly risky themselves (infection).

Some additional cysts have appeared on my pancreas which require me to have an
endoscopic ultrasound and biopsy at least once a year to ensure that they are
not becoming malignant. I had this endoscopic ultrasound at the hospital last
week, but I have not received the report yet. If I eventually do get pancreatic
cancer, the prognosis is not good at all. If all of that is not enough, I have
a very arthritic back and one of our cats is apparently suffering from kidney
disease and currently at the vet for two nights while
his problem is better diagnosed. The cat is about 18 years old and we have had
him for about 13 years, so he does not have much more time himself.

That picture on the web site is getting a little old, but Julia and I still
look about the same. It was taken at an Indian restaurant where we had dinner
with my parents, who have since passed away. My Dad lived to age 91, but I am
sure that I will not even get close to that. My Mother was 84 at her death.

It is difficult at times to recognize your own mortality, but I am generally
positive. As I said, I am glad to have the time to enjoy ham radio and solve
the technical problems that arise such as the current DPC issue. The 6700
should  keep me busy for my remaining years as well.

Thanks for caring...

Ed, K0KC

Elan,

I am looking forward to receiving my 6700. I probably should not have ordered
it since I
retired last October, but with my various health issues I do not see myself
lasting that many more years and I want those years to be enjoyable! Since ham
radio is my primary hobby, I think I deserve it!

I may sell-off some of my other radios to help finance this purchase, but I
hate to let them go...we shall see how my investment portfolio does in the
markets and how much I have to draw it down.

Ed, K0KC

Elan,

I am anxious to start using the 6700 that I have on order, but I still will use
my Flex 5K
and Flex 3K and want them to work right!

Tim said to submit a support ticket which I will do once I am done testing.

You can always write me via email to chat about Flex products or anything else
of mutual interest! I will do the same to you.

you are 100% correct i am a bit worry what is going to be since they more focus
on the 6000 then anything else
i do not see why this was not sort out first time well will have to wait and
see ,keep in touch please , may be if you have time speak to Greg as well see
what he say to you about this driver ,however one point to make is they can
tell to all of us who have issue that they working on it and not keep us in the
Dark .

Thanks for the update, Elan! There apparently was a problem with this Firewire
4.0 driver that held up release of 2.4.4. It was supposed to be available about
the time of the Dayton Hamvention, which was in May. I am sure that another
reason for the delay is that Flex engineers are busy with writing software for
the new 6000 series radios.

I will not share this info with anyone.

The first one is the one provided by Windows and the second one is the one
provided by your Firewire card manufacturer. I used the first one for my
overnight test, but I did have a freeze after I wrote to you. You might want to
try the second one, although they may both possibly be the same code with a
different name for each. I am testing the driver from my Firewire card
manufacturer (LSI) right now and will hopefully determine if it performs better
today. It too may be the same as the one Windows provides, with a different
file name.

All that I can say at this point is to just try each one to see if it improves
your performance, but give it a long trial (overnight at least).

Too bad this stuff can't just work!

Elan,

I am running Windows 7, but I believe that the procedure in Windows XP is
similar if you are
using that version of the operating system. Neil did not give detailed
instructions, but I have done so below:

        * Go to Control Panel in Windows

        * Choose Device Manager

        * Choose IEEE 1394 Bus host controllers

        * If you are using the "legacy" driver, you should see "1394 OHCI
Compliant Host Controller (Legacy)"

        * Double click on that entry and a small window should pop-up showing
the properties of that driver

        * Click on the Driver tab at the top of the small window

        * Click on Update Driver

        * Click on "Browse my computer for driver software"

        * Click on "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer"

        * Double click on the 1394 OCHI Compliant Host Controller - without
"Legacy" in parenthesis)

        * Windows should then automatically install the selected driver

        * Close all windows and restart your computer

        * Check in Device Manager that the desired driver is running.

        * Enjoy your Flex radio!

There may also be a driver available from your Firewire card manufacturer in
Device Manager...I did not try using this driver. If you still have problems
after completing the above steps, you might want to try the manufacturer's
driver...be sure to search the Internet for the latest version (that can be
done in Device Manager).

Lots of nice equipment on your QRZ.com page!

Good luck and let me know if this helps!

Ed, K0KC

Alex,

After installing v2.4.4 on my Win 7/32 system (Flex 5000), I started
experiencing
"freezes" every one to two hours, even under "Safe Mode Level 2". I had not
experienced this problem with 2.3.5 running the "legacy" driver. The Firewire
applet showed that I was getting at least one DPC of over 50,000 microseconds
when the freezes occurred.

I tried disabling various applications that were running with PowerSDR to no
avail. I finally went back to review recent posts on this list and noted that
Neal Campbell, our local computer guru, suggested that we try using the driver
included with Windows 7 instead of the "legacy" driver. I did that yesterday
afternoon and let the system run overnight with no freezes, so it appears that
the problem may have been solved, at least for my Firewire card. I also
returned to "Normal Mode" before I ran the test overnight which should improve
latency performance.

I played a YouTube video while PowerSDR 2.4.4 was running this morning to
replicate your issue and everything ran fine for
 me.

Best of luck in solving your problem!

Ed, K0KC

Hi Ted,

it happened to me also and I had to do a complete rollback to 235.
My setup: Flex-3000, Win7 64bit, SONY VAIO notebook with firewire port.

I have no issues at all with PSDR 235, although it runs on the Flex driver with
"safe mode 3". There is a latency issue, as I have to have AnitVir firewall and
some other programs running in the background. My crash test is to have PSDR
running and to look at a video clip
on YouTube at the same time. 235 runs, 244 freezes.

I
had a direct contact with my FlexRadio representative here in Germany and he
told me the same everybody does: set "safe mode 2", take the old legacy
driver... nothing works... rollback then...

I think that the FlexRadio programmers should rework their firewire driver to
run on our systems also or we will miss all the updates in the future.

BTW it you need the rollback info, just mail me at dh...@darc.de

Vy 73,

Alex DH2ID
