I'm glad to see people are cleaning up the autoconf stuff. Here's yet another area that needs some TLC: There appears to be little or no chance that the autoconf system will do the right thing on 64-bit machines.
I'm hoping this will be easy for some autoconf guru to fix. I would imagine there are well-known standard techniques for coping with lib/lib64 issues.
