Tim,
        the most common problem that I have found for it not pasting when
doing these operations is:
after copying and switching to the component window you want to paste into,
"click on the window" before doing your paste operation. Until you click in
that pane, it is not the active pane.

(Also don't forget to click for your reference point as part of the copy
operation.)

        As for your name problem, as soon as you create the new component,
through the tools menu choose rename component and give it a name. Or you
can right click on the generic component name that is give to the new
component and rename it through the context sensitive right click menu. I
think that's right, don't have my Protel available at the moment.
        Also, as soon as I have done the paste operations I will close the
origin library so that I don't edit the wrong part by accident.
