Hi David,
Excellent. Thanks for looking into this!
With a full day at work tomorrow (12 hour shifts on Friday are a
pain)... I'll try the updated firmware over the weekend.
I've also been looking at your blog entry about adding a 7 MHz notch
filter to a NBN VDSL2 line to trick the modem into not using that part
of the spectrum. I'll be trying your filter design out in coming days
too! :-)

Hi Michael,
I've been working on this one. One thing lead to another and I ended up
refactoring all of freedv_api.c which was getting out of hand with all
the modes that had been added over the years:
https://github.com/drowe67/codec2/pull/111
So as well as testing the SM1000 we'll need to test a new version of
FreeDV GUI shortly :-)
Anyhoo, some new v4 firmware for you (and anyone else) to try:
https://github.com/drowe67/codec2/blob/master/stm32/doc/sm1000_manual.md
It's been running all day here right next to me (I'm WFH) without a
single noise. In fact it's a bit _too_ quiet, although I can see the
sync led flashing every few seconds as it gets a "maybe 700D" sync on noise.
Cheers,
David

Hi Michael,
I've managed to reproduce the issue by setting up my FT-817 with a
SM1000, and some powered speakers so I could leave it running for a
while and hear it from the next room. It's "breaking squelch" for me a
few times a minute. Might be signal dependent too, ie what sort of
background signals there are on the band.
Would be nice to fix this, so the SM1000 can be left running like a
squelched FM radio.
I'll think about how to deal with this, will take a few weeks to fix.
Steve - thanks for your suggestions too.
Cheers,
David

Hi David,
I've tried Rev 2 again and it doesn't seem to be much better.
I can minimise the issue by reducing the audio level out of the IC-7100
Accessory connector (menu setting changed from 50% to 25%).
The SM1000 still seems decode the transmissions from the
FreeDV/HPSDR/PowerSDR setup fine with the audio output level reduced to
25%.
What is the recommended (optimal) audio level expected at the input of
the SM1000 with the RIG SPKR trimpot set midway? Is the flashing
Clip/Error LED an indication of too much audio in? When does it's
function change from Clip to Error?
Michael.

Hi David,
I don't recall having this issue with the Rev 2 firmware, but I am
going to "downgrade" today to compare.
Still unsure of what triggers it... but when I disconnect my IC-7100
from the antenna the issue is very much less pronounced. The smallest
amount of QRM (even inaudible to my ear) seems to make it worse.

Hi Michael,
OK thanks I will check this out over the weekend and get back to you.
There's a TTY output that we can use to see what's going on (e.g. if
it's getting false sync or breaking squelch).
List: Is anyone else using the SM1000 with 700D experiencing this
problem?
Michael - was the problem present on the Rev 2 firmware?

David

Hi David (et al),
I loaded my SM1000 (Ref D) with v3 firmware today and it seems to be
working very well on air.
My SM1000 is connected to an Icom IC-7100 using the accessory
connector,
SM1000 modified to give more audio drive into the ACC connector.
I'm using FreeDV together with a HPSDR/PowerSDR to monitor and transmit
back to the SM1000.
The only thing I have noticed is that when in 700D mode, I get a
continual burbles and squeaks from the SM1000 when tuned to a free
frequency. The Sync and Clip/Error LEDs flash almost continually. The
audio level from the radio into the SM1000 doesn't seem to make a
difference, very low audio levels from the IC-7100 into the SM1000
seems
to make this happen.
I get the occasional flash of the Sync and Clip/Error LED in 1600 mode,
but until it actually starts decoding a 1600 transmission, it remains
silent.

Hello List,
A few months ago Mal, VK8MT, spotted a few bugs in the SM1000 user
interface. I have had a go at fixing them, integrating the latest 700D
modem tweaks, and adding the automatic microphone equaliser:
https://github.com/drowe67/codec2/pull/58
I've also tweaked the doco, adding links to the V3 binaries, and
fixing
a glitch in the example wiring diagram:
https://github.com/drowe67/codec2/blob/dr-sm1000-tweaks/stm32/doc/sm1000_manual.md
If you are interested, please try it out over the air and let me know
how it goes.

On power on you should hear 'V3' in morse, followed by the current
mode
(ANA for analog if it's a fresh reflash).
Thanks,
David
