So, I'm not clear what your saying. You would have all this functionality excluded from Freevo, becuase of your legal concerns? I understand about sourceforge, but until someone actually complains or makes an issue of it, why worry?
Do you seriously think the cops will come knocking on your door because you made a back-up of a cd or dvd you owned? I know the kid who did it originally is still having problems over it, but its all out in the open now, the Genie is out of the bottle - and has been for some time. I think this debate could have been better made maybe two or 3 years ago, when all this first happend. But I don't know if it really is all that important right now. I mean be assured that the authorities will be hunting down pirates and people who make illegal copies of their media to share, which is all well and good I guess, but ultimately the chances of someone comming after the user, or indeed a Linux OS distributer who includes this functionality has to be pretty slim. So far as far as I know, only RedHat have panicked, although I don't see a mad rush by other Linux distributers to remove MP3/DVD functionality. Anyway I'm not sure if MPlayer is actually hosted on Sourceforge. My guess is peeps will just move their servers around to wherever the law permits this sort of thing. I know freevo is, so that may or may not be an issue. Right now it doesn't appear to be much of one. It still sucks, becaase unless someone comes up with a solution soon (i.e. a way to legally play DVD's and other media on Linux) the whole situation will remain a bit of a mess. I still can't imagine how much use a HTPC system would be without this kind of functionality though... Nonetheless if this is going to cause problems for you, maybe a version without these components might be a solution for you after all?
