To answer your question (before the pissing contest started):

You can either build/buy a LIRC serial adapter that plugs into your serial
port for reception and transmission (yes, it does both).
Or go for a USB one.

I bought a TIRA-2, but the support has been horrible. Advertised as linux
compatible, with no instructions on how to make it go. No support help
either.

The LIRC site has a number of compatible units listed, and if your
electricly inclined, a schematic on how to built the serial port model.

As for scripting it into freevo. I have asked about it, but never got a
response.

So either:
1) No one is tackling this project
2) Or my post got missed.

I'd be more than happy to try it to make it work, but I still havent got the
TIRA 2 to work (and now I have a kernel panic to try to figure out as my
kernel slowly self destructs)
