I must admit, I'm pretty suprised! I've seen a lot of PHP sites, and the PHP
movement is growing by leaps 'n bounds. Yet most folks seem to think its not
worth the bother. Perhaps y'all oughta talk to some non-CFers about what
they think on the usefulness of Cold Fusion! Most folks in the general 'net
populace barely know what CF is. There isn't an entire shelf of books at
Barnes and Noble dedicated to CF. Hah, there isn't a single row of books
dedicated to it.
I'm not trying to start a jihad here. I think y'all are underestimating the
usefulness of PHP. I mean, hey, its cross-platform available, its free, its
open source. PHP is pretty common in the Linux world, and what with all the
hype Linux generates, I'm surprised that pointy-haired bosses nationwide
haven't cried out for more PHP. Probably because there hasn't been an
article on PHP in an in-flight magazine yet.
Hey, let's say you got a new job as being the web guru for a company that
for whatever reason, refused to spend much on software, although of course
they paid you handsomely. What would you choose to run? Me, I'd take a
loOoOoNg look at PHP and MySQL, running on a Linux box with Apache.
(and now I'm gonna shift into high gear !) And another thing, what's this
nonsense about Java? Sure there are ads for Java developers. Okay. You gotta
eat, I can understand that. But, I do believe the trend these days to Java
is 90% hype, and not based on a legitimate analysis of what solution is the
most beneficial for delivering apps in a web environment.
Face it, Java is a hassle to learn, its a very unforgiving language, its
vastly more complex than CF. This means that in general, it will take much
longer to deliver business application "X" using Java compared to CF, PHP,
or other script-style languages.
Java has plenty of benefits, to be sure. But, I really believe the current
infatuation with Java is techno puppy love, with googley eyes and big hearts
and I wuv you written every where.
I say, "Java Shmava"...
