Not knowing what router you have makes this difficult to troubleshoot, but l know that Linksys routers work fine (without having to open ports or anything), especially when you upgrade the firmware to the latest release.
Have you upgraded the firmware of your router? That's a good place to start.
We have had no issue with either securemote 4.1 SP5 (build 4200) with FW1 4.1 SP6 or the latest R56 securemote and NG FP3 (installing the VPN on PC's with zone alarm was quite a struggle though).
If upgrading your firmware does not assist you, let us know what router you are using.
