Hi all,
Our current firewall appliances suffer from performance issues when some of
the application layer checks in smartdefense (especially http and dns
checks) are switched on. So, we are planning to buy new appliances. I wonder if you could share your opinions about the pros and cons of employing nokia
platforms compared to other platforms (like sun, hp, etc.)?
Nokia has good built in routing capabilities.
If you are using dynamic routing, you can have a look at the nokia IPs.
What make us concern about the nokia platforms is that memory is limited to a max of 2 GB, no info about what cpu is used, etc.
basically, an nokia is a pc in a rack format, that runs a proprietary OS based on freebsd.
you can open the box when you receive it and check what's inside :)
I don't know what are the cpu used.
However, some guys say
that nokia platforms are optimized for firewall usage particularly for
checkpoint, and a nokia with 2 GB memory will be comparable to other
platforms having 4 GB of memory. I'll be glad if you share your opinions or
point out any document that will help.
You also have a good support from nokia, and it's also something to take under consideration.

Regarding the performances, the red hat EL 3 secureplatform is based on has also good capabilities.

It also depends on the hardware you already have.
If you're familiar with hp hardware and have a lot of hp servers already, you can go to secureplatform. Pay attention to the list of network cards that are in the HCL, because if you plan to use a network
card that's not on this list, you can have some troubles.
Thank you in advance...

Regards.
