Hope the following helps, if already discussed or not relevant then please > /dev/null ;-> Other than system performance factors, the Load Sharing "algorithm" is configurable in the SmartDashboard cluster object from the ClusterXL page, Advanced Load Sharing Configuration window. Choosing the CCP Transport Mode on the Cluster Members: If the connecting switch is incapable of forwarding multicast, it is possible, though less efficient, for the switch to use broadcast to forward traffic. The ClusterXL Control Protocol (CCP) on the cluster members uses multicast by default, because it is more efficient than broadcast. To toggle the CCP mode between broadcast and multicast, use the following command on each cluster member: cphaconf set_ccp broadcast/multicast Andrew CSC Computer Sciences Limited Registered Office: Royal Pavilion, Wellesley Road, Aldershot, Hampshire, GU11 1PZ, UK Registered in England No: 0963578 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This is a PRIVATE message. I guess, you mean Multicast ja Unicast-modes? There is no such a mode as "Broadcast"... -lari- -----Original Message----- From: Mailing list for discussion of Firewall-1 on behalf of cisco4ng Sent: Sat 12/8/2007 5:51 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [FW-1] Load Sharing Theory Question... It really depends on whether you use ClusterXL in broadcast or unicast mode. When you have ClusterXL in broadcast mode, you can have equally sharing load. When you use it in unicast mode, one node has to be a "pivot" mode so you will get about 30% traffics on the pivot node and 70% traffics on the other node. In unicast node, the pivot will determine which gateway will handle the connection. While in clusterXL broadcast mode, you achieve equal load-sharing, there are disadvantages to this mode but I can't recall what they are at the moment. That's my understanding of ClusterXL. We're also using it in our environemt, Active/Active with Flood-gate. Let me tell you, at the moment ClusterXL is very cool, very very robust ;) Anyways, here is my question: My technical director has asked for an explanation describing how FW1's load-sharing determine's which gateway will handle a connection? Is it a simple round-robin, does it factor in the CPU load, network load of each cluster member etc. Thanks Guys!
