Liability. :) Corporate legal: If you screw up, and admit it, you are liable and people can come after you. They can still come after you if you don't admit it, but it is a lot harder (and more expensive for them) which is a deterrent. Many have cured the problem simply by removing apple's little "feet" (or having them rub off) and putting some thicker ones on the display.
