I think...if my memory serves me...that the low end model also gets 
stiffed when it comes to optical drives, hence the "low end".
It was this way for the Titanium as well. Last year at least. Boy, I'm 
glad I didn't buy a TiBook last year after the improvements in speed and 
audio this time round.

Four months ago I went to my local AppleStore and was told the strangest 
thing about the iBook icebook models on display. He point blank told me 
that the 12" iBooks performed better than the 14" iBooks. When I asked 
him to explain what in the manufacturing process would cause this, he got
all tight lipped and paranoid and and wouldn't or couldn't explain why. 
Must have had something to do with his commission?
