I don't think anyone is saying that at all.

It surely is a major upgrade. Here's the thing though- actual updated
functionality is not that big- it's major improvements to the
infrastructure.

Where you hear the disappointment is generally related to many people
thinking that the original OSX was long on promises and short on delivery.
It's kind of similar to filemaker- awhile back they had an upgrade that
added hardly anything but essentially financed a rewrite of core parts of
the app. People said "oh, that's ok the next version will be awesome".
They've done it a few times, and now their user base is starting to hate
them. It's almost frightening.

Beyond the performance enhancements, there isn't much new in 10.2. But for a
lot of people, OSX is grating on them due to performance issues. So they're
having to upgrade just to fix something that wasn't optimal when it was
sold to them. Whether you agree or disagree, surely you can see where
they're coming from.

> Almost as bad as all the people screaming bloody murder over mac.com
> charging now.

Well, it's slimy. It's a money grab, and people can see that- consider it a
wake up call to the apple purists. Kind of like the first time your kid
talks a parent... Just surprising that apple would do it.

Either way you slice it really, it's slimy, microsoft-like. They pushed it
down people's throats when they setup their mac, pushed it as a value-added
reason to buy, got the consumer base dependant on it and then said "oh, by
the way, pay us or we'll cut you off now".

Let's say you took a job and one of the conditions was that they'd give you
a company car, and they asked you to use that car because it had their logo
and promoted their company. Well, you don't need =two= cars, so you just use
the company car and sell your other car even though it runs better. Then a
bit later they come in and say "we want you to pay for the company car now".
You might not leave the company, but the value of working there has just
been decreased, and you definitely will lose good will towards it.

What apple did was slimier than the above- it's business, but slimy business
and leaves a bad taste in your mouth. You'd hear no one bitching if apple
cut back the free services, or kept what they had and =added= new pay
services.

Not true. I can point you to a bunch of places that'll give you a bunch of
emails and web space for $8 a month or less. You'd have to get your online
greeting cards somewhere else, though.
