I swear this Pismo is possessed. I now have a mouse which only works in OS
9, and then only after OS 9 has got half way through the boot sequence.
Early in the boot process only the trackpad causes the cursor to move. It's
only after the icons appear (presumably some bus initialisation or driver
loading) that the mouse becomes responsive. Tomorrow I'll test it on my
tower to see if it'll work in OS X there.

In OS X nothing happens: the mouse is recognised as a USB device but the
computer doesn't know what to do with it (the light of the LED lights up in
the mouse). This is what the Apple System Profiler says.

USB Bus 1:
USB Device:
+-------------------------------------------+
Product ID : 0 ($0)
Vendor ID : 1578
Device Speed : Low
Power (mA) : 500
+-------------------------------------------+

It's an USB Logitech Wheel Mouse (el cheapo) optical mouse. I love the form
factor but why doesn't OS X recognise it as a mouse? (I'm not sure how those
two phrases go together but...) Is this even possible? Is my computer bust
(do I have to send it in for service)? Is OS X broken in a way that I can
fix it? Is the mouse plain simply incompatible with OS X (it's a MOUSE. How
complicated can a mouse be?)? My Microsoft Intellipoint works seamlessly
with OS X on this computer -- no software required.

Any thoughts?

Thanks, Eric.
