Ok, my girlfriend's Lombard/333 in OS 9 has similar problems. It will often fail to activate the screen when it hasn't quite gone to sleep. I can't exactly predict when it happens. The only way around that (i.e. to activate the screen) is to put the computer to sleep (press power key and type s for sleep) and wake it up. At that point it wakes up fully.
