Ok, my girlfriend's Lombard/333 in OS 9 has similar problems. It will often
fail to activate the screen when it hasn't quite gone to sleep. I can't
exactly predict when it happens.

The only way around that (i.e. to activate the screen) is to put the
computer to sleep (press power key and type s for sleep) and wake it up. At
that point it wakes up fully.
