It works great.  I have a 19in optiquest crt monitor that I previously used
connected to my beige g3, then a 2001 ibook, and now a 12in powerbook.  When
you hook it up, go to the monitors control panel and play with the settings
until you get it how you like.  To shut off the ibook's screen, just lower
the brightness with the f1 key until it shuts off, or do the same in the
control panel.

I love it.  I have the portability of a 12in computer with a huge screen
when I get home.  I have a mouse, keyboard, etc all ready to connect on my
desk.  Most people don't realize I'm running it all off my laptop.
